The Faery folk were many and varied, from the prankish and sometimes dangerous Sidhe to the beloved Flower Fairy, and all were having a difficulty traveling their beloved isle. The Humans (tolerated by the Faery as young, new life forms) had built huge shelters all over the land. Now it was understood that they lacked magical ability but it still made life hard. Faery wings get tired and passing thru all that wood and stone was exhausting. What to do? Horses and the great stag hounds were too unmanageable for all but the most powerful and they were just plain messy to keep. It was indeed a puzzlement! When all hope was almost lost and a great storm was stranding the Faery in all sorts of inconvenient places, the wish magic finally worked. At first the waterlogged, bedraggled creature on the shore looked to no one like much of anything but the storm ended, the sun came out of hiding and the magic started. The wet thing (and everyone knows Faery hate anything wet) dried and became the most beautiful dog. He had wonderful soft skin, where other dogs had only rough hair, and spectacular crest, stockings and plume. But, best of all he was just Faery size.
They approached his with caution and wonder of wonders he was a magnificent
inside as out. He gladly agreed to carry the Faery on their travels in
exchange for food and scratching where he couldn't reach.
